ITS HISTORY
Fort des Basses Perches was one of the first works to be built between 1874 and 1877 by General Séré de Rivières and was constructed at the same time as its neighbour, the Fort des Hautes Perches. It was built at an altitude of 425 metres to the south-east of the town of Belfort It was constructed on the site of a redoubt which protected the Belfort Citadel during the siege of 1870. Its location is relatively close to the central core of the Belfort stronghold, below the Fort des Hautes Perches, around 1 kilometre from the Belfort Citadel.
Fort des Basses Perches was unique in that it had been fitted two counterscarp coffers when it was built, which was well before the torpedo shell crisis. These coffers enabled it to adapt better to the surrounding terrain. From 1893, the fort was linked to other forts around Belfort by a strategic railway Since 1999, Fort des Basses Perches has belonged to the municipality of Danjoutin. It is maintained by the Amicale du Fort des Basses Perches, a group of enthusiasts who regularly organise guided tours. he fort is accessible all year round, and many footpaths and hiking trails pass alongside it.
